Career Mode : Richard Gasquet 2019

Postby CHAPI » 22 Jul 2019, 16:40

Hey all, I am doing a career mode with Gasquet. It's seasons mode, and I begin in 2019.
The aim is to play one the last few seasons of the career of an incredible player, who had to deal with many injuries.
From a promising talent at the age of 19 (ranked 7 in the world!) to a more forgotten dark horse on the Tour, Richard Gasquet is still very much respected by many people across the globe.
So, let's jump into the new season!
There is hope for the helpless, rest for the weary and love for the broken heart...
There is grace and forgiveness, mercy and healing, He'll meet you wherever you are. Cry out to Jesus!

I start the season ranked no. 25
Difficulty level: Incredible 3

BRISBANE (250)
Gasquet is seeded no. 2
1R: BYE
2R: Garin W 6/3 6/1
QF: Jasika (7) W 6/2 6/1
SF: Nishioka W 6/3 6/3
F: Tomic W 6/3 6/4
Points won: 250
Rank: 22

Recap: A very nice way to start the season, with a first title. It's only a 250 tournament but some good victories all along against quality baseliners like Garin and Nishioka. No set dropped either.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN (Grand Slam)
Gasquet is seeded no. 21
R1: J-V Costa (Q) W 6/1 6/1 6/2
R2: Fucsovics W 6/4 6/1 7/6(8)
R3: Nishikori (15) L 6/4 6/4 6/4
Points won: 90
Rank: 24 (-2)

Recap: A nice way to start my Grand Slam journey. 2 good victories in straight sets before a painful defeat to an amazing player, former top 10. Clearly a big difference between me and Nishikori's game. Ruthless performance from him. I was totally unable to challenge him in a set.

MONTPELLIER (250)
Gasquet is seeded no. 6

INDIAN WELLS (1000)
Seeded no. 20
R1: BYE
R2: Giraldo W 6/2 6/0
R3: Sock (WC) W 7/5 6/3
R4: Djokovic (1) L 6/2 6/3
Points won: 90
Rank: 21 (+1)

Recap: First Masters 1000 tournament, and a very good one. Solid win in straights against a former top 10 in R3. Very difficult task ahead in the last 16, playing the World no. 1 at Indian Wells is a massive challenge. Clearly too big of a test for me. Hopefully a good run in Miami next.

MIAMI (1000)
So, onto the 2nd Masters 1000 event of the year. Seeded no. 18 so low expectations.
R1: BYE
R2: Kozlov W 6/1 6/1
R3: Kudla (WC) W 6/3 6/3
R4: Alex Zverev (8) W 7/6(4) 7/6(1)
QF: Djokovic (1) W 7/6(5) 2/6 7/6(5)
SF: Tsitsipas (14) W 6/3 6/4
F: Fognini (24) L 7/6(4) 7/6(3)
Points won: 600
Rank: 16 (+5)

Recap: What an unbelievable run! Got a favorable draw till the last 16, then a pretty straightforward win against an out-of-form Zverev. The quarterfinal win over the World no. 1 was something special, got helped by two tiebreakers where Novak wasn't playing at his best. Thankful for that because that 2nd set was a wreck. Once I beat Djokovic, I never felt like Tsitsipas was going to stop me from my first Masters 1000 final. This was it, the biggest match of my season so far. Tense match, got settled by two tiebreaks and unfortunately, Fognini was too hot for me in the 7-point shootouts. His play style with early ball taking and flat strokes was difficult for me to handle.
So, a bitter ending to a breakthrough run in Miami. Now, unto the clay season, where the main objective will be Roland Garros on home soil. I have decided to rest and skip Monte-Carlo.

BARCELONA (500)
First clay tournament. Seeded no. 7.
R1: BYE
R2: Berdych W 6/2 6/2
R3: Bautista Agut (11) W 6/4 3/6 6/1
QF: Khachanov (4) W 7/5 7/6(5)
SF: Djokovic (1) L 6/2 6/4
Points won: 180
Rank: 15 (+2)

Recap: After a dream run to the Miami final, I was given a very tough draw to begin my clay-court season. Some tough matches along the way, notably against Bautista Agut which stretched to 3, and against no. 4-seeded Khachanov in the last 8. After beating Djokovic in Miami, this felt much more like the real World no. 1 when I met him in the semis. Tight second set but straightforward for Djokovic who went on to lift the title.
A good run overall for me, as I look forward to 2 Masters 1000 events before the big one.

MADRID (1000)
Penultimate clay tournament in preparation for Roland Garros. Seeded no. 13
R1: Monfils W 6/3 7/6(2)
R2: Bolt (Q) W 6/3 6/1
R3: Djokovic (1) L 6/2 6/1
Points won: 90
Rank: 15 (+0)

Recap: Fine run, tough draw having to play the top seed as early as the 3rd round. Solid win against compatriot Monfils before a comfortable dismissal of Aussie qualifier Alex Bolt. In R3, my toughest defeat of the season by far, managed to win only 3 games against an in-form Djokovic. No chance or whatsoever, it was done in just an hour.
Focus now shifts onto Rome. Hopefully a good run there to build some momentum on the clay before the 2nd Slam of the year.

ROME (1000)
Seeded no. 9.
R1: Berrettini (WC) W 6/3 7/5
R2: Mayer W 6/2 6/2
R3: Tsitsipas (6) L 6/3 7/6(1)
Points won: 90
Rank: 16 (-1)

Recap: A tough result despite a good run to the last 16. Tsitsipas' aggressive game was too much for me as he managed to claim revenge from the Miami semifinal. Disappointing end to my journey in Rome as I had a pretty open draw being in Isner's quarter, who was seeded no. 3.
I definitely would have enjoyed playing more matches in Rome before RG, but that's ok. We'll stick to the original plan.
So here we go, one of the most important tournaments of the year for me begins on home soil: ROLAND GARROS next.

ROLAND GARROS (Grand Slam)
One of the most important tournaments of the season for me. Seeded no. 13
R1: Sousa W 6/2 6/1 6/3
R2: Herbert (WC) W 3/6 6/2 6/2 6/1
R3: Shapovalov (19) L 4/6 6/4 6/3 4/6 8/6
Points won: 90
Rank: 15 (+1)

Recap: Such a disappointment. At the start of the season, RG was one of my main objectives and I wanted desperately to make a deep run there. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned. First two rounds were tough but against unseeded opponents so no trouble. Even against Herbert whose serve and volleying caused me a lot of trouble for a set. In the third round, a massive opportunity at revenge against Shapovalov. The first two sets were very very close with a single break for each being sufficient. Then he took control of the third with the momentum carried from the second set. The fourth was a battle but I managed to take it to a decider. The fifth is very tough, we both had our chances to break, but as he was serving first he got over the edge and created ultimately, match point. The rest is history.
Frustrating to know that Shapovalov had to withdraw from the next round due to injury. I had a pretty decent draw, to be honest. Sitting in Anderson's quarter along with the likes of Del Potro and Zverev, I really did fancy my chances. Perhaps a little too much.
Well, overall a pretty bad clay court season for me.
But now, it's grass time. And I have low expectations for this one. We'll see how it goes, but the main objective will be to play as many events as posible to prepare Wimbledon and get as many points.

Little ranking update as we are halfway through the season:
Men Tour Rank: 15
The Race: 8

Obviously, qualifying for the year-end finals in London is an objective for me.
And making the top 10 in the rankings at some point.

S-HERTOGENBOSCH (250)
I decided to pick s-Hertogenbosch as my first grass-court tournament of the season instead of Stuttgart because I was hoping to get an easier draw. Let's face it, it wasn't the case.
Seeded no. 3
R1: BYE
R2: Andreozzi W 6/0 6/1
QF: Wawrinka (5) W 4/6 6/3 7/5
SF: Tsitsipas (2) L 6/7(5) 6/3 6/4
Points won: 90
Rank: 15 (+0)

Recap: Well, a very tough draw for a 250 tournament but that's ok. Managed a good run. A bagel in the first match to get the grass-court tennis into motion. Then a very satisfying win over Stan Wawrinka in the quarters. He was serving for the match in the decider at 5-3 but managed to turn things around and win the next 4 games. That was a very good win, got me confident about a third matchup this year with young Greek sensation Tsitsipas. Things went well for a set, but then he started to be more aggressive on my service games and it made a big difference. His volleying was clutch too. Overall, a good way to tune my game into grass court mood.
Next: London Queen's

LONDON QUEEN'S CLUB (500)
Seeded no. 3
R1: Haase W 6/4 6/1
R2: Auger-Aliassime (Q) W 7/5 6/4
QF: Coric (8) L 6/4 6/4
Points won: 90
Rank: 14 (+1)

Recap: A tough draw and a dissapointing result against Coric in the last 8. But to be honest, a solid run nonetheless with two solid wins including one over talented next Gen player Felix in R2. Managed to weather the storm against him because he looked more powerful than I did. And I wouldn't have fancied my chances against no-2 seeded Thiem in the semis anyway.
And surprisingly, I jumped one spot in the rankings which is always nice to take in.
Well, that's a wrap for the grass-court season with only the big one remaining: WIMBLEDON
