Does the CPU cheat on higher difficulties?

Postby Bambi » 13 Aug 2019, 21:22

Hi!

First I would like to say it's a great game, propably the best tennis game out there.

Been playing it for a while now and I'm just wondering, when playing on higher difficulties against the CPU, are there any boost or something? Cuz when playing on Incredible sub level 2 or higher, the CPUs shots always seems to land very close to the baselines?

Thanks in advanced,

Hello,

there's no cheat per se. At Incredible level, the CPU gets a boost on his skills : +2% relative per sublevel ; eg: 50% => 51% at Incredible-1.

He also aims closer to the left/right lines and prepares his strikes faster, but a human can still do the same or better until at least Incredible-4 (if he has enough time to prepare his strikes).

The only thing the CPU can do and a human cannot is to aim close to the lines even when hitting the ball at the last instant, but that even the Beginner CPU can do it.

With all respect, but I don't agree with you Manutoo. By giving the CPU a boost on his skills IS what most people would call cheating! When the CPU are able to make shot selections that the player can't, for instance aiming close to the lines, making drop shots with 100 percent success etc... that's cheating. It's just pure robotic gameplay in advance for the CPU.

Well, good AI tells what you are thinking as a player, its about intentionality (the ability of the player to devise his own meaningful goals thru his or her understanding of the game dynamic and to formulate meaningful plans to achieve them using the information and resources provided by the game. Currently there's no real strategy in this game, for instance aiming towards Federers backhand when playing as Nadal to open up the court. In addition, good AI can interact with the game's systems. This seems the AI character looks smart. Good AI reacts to the player and how he or she play (using macro and micro AI system).

Developers should always be trying to make further advancements in AI tech, create more nuanced behaviour for the CPU. Although its important to remember that the AI is not only a technical problem but also a design problem, every game such as this, should approach it in a slightly different way than just boost the CPU skills.

If the CPU was looking at what keys you were pressing to flawlessly anticipate your strikes, I'd call that cheating.

If the physics rules were changed so his strikes were most successful than yours, I'd call that cheating.

The skill boost is not hidden as it's explained in the documentation, and it makes sense in term of tennis ; ie: a stronger opponent is an opponent with better skills, so if you called for a better opponent, you shouldn't be surprised that's the case ; you can call that cheating if you want, but it's not much relevant.

The CPU not being tied to his strike preparation length to be able to aim left/right is not to give him an advantage, but to be more realistic.

And he doesn't have any bonus on his drop shot, except the skill bonus as explained above.
