How to make your Mod downloadable in-game

Postby manutoo » 25 Apr 2023, 09:52

Hello,

with the v0.83, it is now possible to download Mods from within the game with the help of the ModIO plugin.

Here is how to upload your Mod :
1) Create a .zip file containing your whole Mod folder (so the 1st folder you see when you open the .zip is your Mod folder, not the files within)
2) Create your Mod from here : https://mod.io/g/tennis-elbow-4/m/add/
3) Upload your .zip file
4) Wait for a little for the system to scan your file
5) Once it's live, you should see your Mod in the game Mod Management menu

Notes :
- the maximum size of the Mod .zip file is 8GB
- this system is compatible with all platforms, so hopefully, it should work flawlessly on Steam Deck & Consoles, without any additional step
- if you have your mod installed both in the Mods folder and by ModIO, and you want to work on your Mod, you should have this line in your Mods.ini, under [Mod] :
PreferModIo = 0
This will then ignore the ModIO version of the Mod. If the line isn't there, then the "Mods\<YourModName>" folder will be ignored.
- you can see all the uploaded Mods for TE4 here : https://mod.io/g/tennis-elbow-4
- ModIO doesn't support non-ASCII characters in the filenames of your Mod's .zip, so don't use any special characters for your saved Training Club players (if any) ; for the language files, use their English name instead ; eg: lang_French_Mod.txt instead of lang_Français_Mod.txt (for the complete list, check the "Ascii_" codes in lang_English.txt) ; ditto if you need to change the country codes

Installing the Mods from ModIO into another folder :
locate the file "globalsettings.json" in this folder :
- Windows : %LOCALAPPDATA%\mod.io\
- MacOS : ~/Library/Application Support/mod.io/
- Linux : ~/.local/share/mod.io/
Edit it with a text editor ; on Windows, it contains :
Code: Select all
{"RootLocalStoragePath":"C:\\Users\\Public/mod.io"}

It should be similar on MacOS & Linux.
You can change it to something like this to get the Mods on your D: drive :
Code: Select all
{"RootLocalStoragePath":"D:\\TennisElbow4-Mods"}

This is awesome!!! Thanks for this addition Manu! I'm sure it'll bring mods to players that otherwise wouldn't have any idea modding was possible. I only have 2 points for now:
1) I don't recall atm the largest mod on both TE2013 nor TE4, but I think for now the 8GB size limit is enough, my only concern is that eventually mods can reach that limit, specially if they use very high textures models. I guess there's no problem here since we can still install mods the 'old' way, so if the need arises, we could have the base mod from this new method and separate download for textures or high quality textures.

2) I'm guessing that by default the mod will be downloaded to either the install location of the game or the user folder, Is it possible to change this? For example to a different drive?

Again, thanks for this addition, huge step forward!!

Fed1,
1) using jpg images instead of png would likely be enough for a long time before reaching the 8GB limit

2) I had a quick look and couldn't find anything, so I asked ModIO support ; hopefully, they'll have a solution or create one in the future, as low space in the system drive is a common issue

Fed1,
I just added to the 1st post the "Installing the Mods from ModIO into another folder" section.

Thanks Manu for looking into this! Indeed it's still fairly common to have a small ssd for OS and a larger drive for storage!!

For everybody,
Added this to the 1st post :
ModIO doesn't support non-ASCII characters in the filenames of your Mod's .zip, so don't use any special characters for your saved Training Club players (if any) ; for the language files, use their English name instead ; eg: lang_French_Mod.txt instead of lang_Français_Mod.txt (for the complete list, check the "Ascii_" codes in lang_English.txt)
